I’ve been hearing more and more about the ‘Moringa’ herb or tree and how it has all these amazing healing properties. It prevents 300 diseases and is helping 3rd world countries in the fight against malnutrition.
I thought it was amazing to hear how it has all the amino acids, tons of protein and has like…4 times the calcium of milk, 7 times the vitamin c of orange juice and way more potassium than bananas too. There’s more but dude…that’s impressive!
So, I’ve been reading about and checking it out for a few reasons…
- I like using whole foods that will help nourish and heal my kids.
- I’m always looking for a more affordable way to feed us healthy, organic, non-gmo foods.
- I also like the comfort that comes with knowing how an item is prepared for my family to consume because there are still recalls and contamination with organic stuff.
So, I’ve been looking into the Moringa tree but I was really disappointed to see it’s a sub-tropical tree. It likes hot, dry regions and Ohio aka Zone 5 is NO WHERE near sub-tropical. We get sub-zero but no sub-tropical. hehe!
Then!! I’ve discovered you CAN grow it everywhere…with some tweekin’ though I probably won’t be able to obtain seed from my plants due to our short season. But, I can still propagate it through stem cuttings! So…I’m not seeing an issue with not having seed as this way I know I’m sure to prevent any possibility of invasive issues since the cuttings and mother will be contained in a pot and I can move it indoors when winter comes.
And! Even though it’ll die off…if I bring it in and protect it from the truly cold winter like the one we had this year, the roots will stay strong and they’ll come back next year. I am tickled to death!!
You see by growing my own Moringa my family will have access to some major healing and nourishment. They’ll have blood that’s rich in iron and energy, their stamina will go up and their bodies will detox all the gunk we breathe in and eat too. (We’re not 100% organic as I do love fries, bean burritos and help me there’s nothing as sweet and delicious as a fountain coke. I’m sorry…it’s a struggle. I’ll hand in my organic card now.) But, while the kids don’t get the coke (I’m the only one that needs caffeine!!) they do get fast food occasionally. I love the Border…what can I say.
Well, it was really cool as I’m looking up all the Moringa herb can do when suddenly I realize, WAIT! It’s from India! (Hello Continent Bin goodies!) And! I bet I’ve ate it in some curries!! I’m still not sure as I’ve not found the proper name but seeing as Moringa is used in Ayurvedic practices…I bet we have ate it!! And, since I’ve never had bad Indian I can safely say that it is DELICIOUS. I’ve also seen on some youtube videos today that you can make soup, smoothies, tea and even use it how you would spinach. So…yum…I see some Moringa saag in our future!!
And, then..I get a message the other day from Karen, with Blue Yonder Urban Farms. She wanted to know if you guys would find a giveaway for 50 Moringa seeds useful. I said, uh yeah!! I am so eloquent when I speak with folks. 😉 I thought it’d be great for Erdkinder as it’s good for the body (be it human or animal) and it has some amazing additional properties. I’m ordering a set for some winter eco/water/science type experiments with the kids. You wouldn’t believe what it can do with dirty or even salt water! It’s too cool.
The giveaway starts now and runs until August 13th. There’s tons of ways you can enter too. If you’d like you can order your own seeds now because they’re offering a coupon code for 20% off 50 or more seeds until the 2nd. Oh, and the code is LL6UVC.
Good luck and be sure to share this on facebook and pinterest. I’d be tickled to death!
