Today, I was reading Teacher Tom and was so touched I started crying. When Sunshine saw the tears she ran for a tissue, handed it to me, said she loved me and
“…if you need me I’m right here next to you”
…and sat in the chair and began to create.
It made me realize I’m not doing such a bad job as a parent. She didn’t try to fix “the problem”. She showed support and empathy. She was meeting my needs without pressure. She was just there for me, waiting patiently, doing something so I didn’t feel pressure to “open up.” I was really feeling good about the role I had played in her development. I felt really good you know.
I looked at her and said, “Thanks for sitting here with me. I really appreciate it.”
To which my amazing child said, “Sure. I just didn’t want to have to come back upstairs if you needed me.”
I’d like to think I’ve created an efficient child…. 🙂
