A newborn with an older sibling means you need a nursing station to feed the baby and keep the others engaged (so you latch painlessly) and calmly for a let-down or simply enjoy the feeding experience with your child.
Yesterday I mentioned I’d have the fridge/freezer combo unit if I was doing it over again. When I’d nurse Sunshine I kept YumEarth suckers (organic and corn syrup free!), Annie’s chewy snacks, and Panda licorice in addition to the fruit & veggie sticks to which I’d add a nutbutter or hummus for dipping. I also made up smoothies in the morning or juice mixes for popscicles.
The nursing station helped me keep the kids entertained so I could nurse their baby sister.
If I had kept these “special” things in the ‘mini fridge’ it would have helped them understand they were only for “nursing moments” in the beginning. It would have been a definite visual clue that this is special and outside the ordinary to have had it out of the kitchen. Plus, I’d tend to forget or they’d change their minds and want something and I wasn’t breaking that latch.
I also had a basket of “goodies”. I bought a bunch of those Color Wonder pens and paper. While messy play is fine I didn’t want to deal with paint splattered accidentally up the wall and ceiling or on me and the baby because someone kicked the paint on their way to potty or suddenly had a shiver as they’re holding an opened pot of paint. Don’t ask. Anyways, they’d choose a paper to color and voila!
They’re entertained and you’re wondering how the species has survived without nursing stations.
I also involved them by asking them to get me water, a diaper or wipes, oh….and believe it or not but they can give an awesome massage! I also used my sling and wrap a lot and it’d hold Sunshine perfectly to nurse so I could read to the kids. Reading days meant lying on the bed so everyone could see but it also meant NAP TIME which is and was AWESOME! I recommend keeping the room a little warm, spritzing their pillows with lavender oil or making them a hops pillow (naturally induces sleep) and they’ll be out before you’ve finished the first chapter. Then you can simply lean your head back, enjoy the quiet sounds of 3 sleeping monkeys and rest yourself.
If you entered yesterday’s giveaway you can earn additional entries still! If you haven’t entered…get over there! Good Luck!! And remember that International Breastfeeding Week is Thursday, August 1-7th!
