Alternative movable alphabet idea

by Honey Rowland 1 Comment

Teach Mama has came up with this REALLY cool idea for an alternative movable alphabet.  It also qualifies as an ecofriendly choice and it meets all 3 of the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle criteria.  (wow…I actually had to look criteria up.  I knew it didn’t start with a Q! 😉 )  But, anyways, she uses lids to things like milkjugs, bottle tops, etc. & puts alpha stickers in upper & lowercase for the kids to match!

She includes other ways to use the bottle caps for math too.  But seriously…unable to purchase a movable alphabet?  Keep your lids & ask family & friends to also.  What’s cheaper than a colored permanent maker in red & blue?  Write them on the inside so they stay protected.

We’re vegan so I never have caps that are large enough to write in (our coconut & almond milk lids are only about a half inch in diameter so I’m going to ask friends for their cows’ milk lids.)  I’ve a few ideas for secret words/messages to decode.  Kinda like Hangman but with bottle caps & no one is hung.  Seriously, that game always freaks me out.

(Sorry about the picture.  My scanner/printer just stopped the other day with a check User Guide message.  I can’t find the user guide!  And I just bought another 200 bucks worth of ink!  Shesh..I should have just bought another printer.)
So anyways, on our version the red is the next step.  You can give fewer chances by decreasing the number of petals, removing the sun/leaves…whatever.  Hope you enjoy playing!
And, be sure to check out teach mama.  I always enjoy reading her posts.  I like her blog name…teach mama…it reminds me everytime I read her stuff to stay humble & remember that the kids are the teachers in this life.  My job is to be the muscle & keep the big n bads from interferring.  Which is really odd to see it in effect cause normally I am the big n bads.  There are definite threads of Shakespeare here. 😉

About Honey Rowland

Organic since it was a dirty hippie word is an easy way to understand me. With 3 kiddos (7, 14, and 16) and one bearded hubby I raise chickens, ducks, turkeys, goats, rabbits and Great Pyrenees livestock guardians on our organically ran mini farm in Ohio. A bull calf and heritage breed pigs have recently been added, along with an impending move into our less than 600 sq ft tiny home that's more and more off grid with each solar panel we buy.

Homeschooling, green living, self-sufficiency and natural parenting (but with yelling) is the norm here. Any skipping through the tulips tends to end with a face plant in chicken or duck poo but being a "glass half full" kind of gal I can smile 'cause the poo is organic and non-gmo! WOW! Thank you, thank you, thank you for the kind words and props for the alphabet letter lid post.

It really means so much, especially when I often think that only my parents and sisters read my blog. :*)

    Cheers, friend.
