“There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth…not going all the way, and not starting.”
Buddha quotes (Hindu Prince Gautama Siddharta, the founder of Buddhism, 563-483 B.C.)
This is part 2 in the Adventures Off Grid Series. You may want to click on over to the beginning.
You can’t say Nicole of Adventures Off Grid hasn’t gone all the way and you definitely can’t say she hasn’t started her journey off the grid. The proof to her journey is the cabin her family is building and the creek water filtered by a Berkey water filter each night.
If you’re just joining me you may want to start at the beginning of the Interview series with Adventures Off Grid.
While the previous years Nicole was learning about homesteading, gardening and animal husbandry the tangible start was the purchase of her Berkey water filter. Suddenly dream changed to drive and the first firm step was taken forward.
The next few steps were additional study and actively putting into practice what she was learning on her then 3 acres. (By the way…it’s for sale if you’re interested in a 3 acre homestead in Middletown, Ohio. You must bring your own fencing and small animals though.) She discovered that while 3 acres were good for her large and growing family in order to have a large pasture raised goat milk herdshare she needed more land.
There’s a lot of work before hand as figuring out the land she wanted came next. Hours (probably thousands) were spent on internet searches, looking at maps and walking the land of various parcels. Eventually she found a 6 acre spot in Kentucky with a creek,
pasture and a bit of woods. She found a travel trailer to move her family into while they built their cabin because. .."with 5 kiddos it’s way easier than with a tent"… since you’ve everything familiar while building what you need.
I asked Nic one question. I knew what her answer would be but I asked anyways, "If you could change one thing before you went off grid what would it be?" And, she answered without a beat and with complete surety.
"That I did it sooner."
I hear you Nic…I hear you.

Lot of good information we are going off grid picking up property in September it will be High Plains Southeast Oregon we won’t have the creeks but I spent all my childhood on a homestead. and we’re doing it under $10000 . one of the things going for us is I have a 5th wheel that is now set up for off grid I’ve also study alternate energy an is commercial salvage company. so as I collecting from Salvage my stockpile will be moving in the spring keep your good hard work up on your homestead
There’s something about a good salvage pile to build a good homestead! 😉 Those high plains make me wonder about water. Will you do a cistern of some sort?
