Give advice; if people don’t listen, let adversity teach them. ~Ethiopian Proverb
I’m NOT into reinventing the wheel. I’m also NOT into standing on the shoulders of giants. I am into listening to the advice of others and utilizing it as I see fit. I want to learn from others but I have to also understand it and not to go off topic but I think that’s why Montessori 3 part lessons always made so much sense to me. It’s also why I believe those in Erdkinder will find value in this series.
If you’re just joining me you might want to start at the beginning of the Adventures Off Grid series.
As my friend, Nicole of Adventures Off Grid, is building her home on six acres with cows, pigs, horses, chickens, ducks and rabbits she’s sharing how some things don’t work. The theory is good but sometimes…reality is different. I love it because when we move we’ll have a bigger jump on where we want to be as Nic is working all the kinks out! hahah!
I know that we’ll go ahead and start building a mini homes before we sell this house. I don’t want to spend the money on a travel trailer that is not sufficient to store the bulk food our family buys. So, why not get get one going for us to live in that can be used for trips? The kids can use it to travel the country when they’re older and not have to spend money on hotels.
And, the kids can learn all the skills that come with building a home before we get there. Basically we’ll be through with Beta mode before we’re there. I also think we’ll use it to camp in so we can test it out. After all, If I go crazy and attempt to mail the kids off to Timbuktu we can safely assume I won’t do well while building another without the constant electric power charging power tools.
I’ve also learned I want to have more space. We live in 1200 sq ft now. 5 people…and that includes the basement. I can’t live in a 12x 12 cabin with a loft ..well…I could but I don’t want to. I like my King sized bed and I love that we’re out of the family bed sharing now. It’s nice to cuddle with Ben and not have a hand smack me in the face or hear Ben oof! from a well placed kick from a sleeping child.
I know we’ll need to save up $20,000.00 I want to buy at least 30 acres and I want to fence and cross fence it. I also want to continue marking off skills and buys from our off grid homestead list.
We’ve been having informal family meetings but I’d like to actually start having a weekly/bi weekly family meeting to make sure everyone is still on board and seeing what new skill the kids want to learn. Tyler has mentioned a few times how he’d like to learn to install solar panels. I’m thinking this spring when we install Rhea’s living roof on the chicken coop that we should use those solar panels and attach them to the minihouse and maybe let them live in it.
They’ll be able to take care of their own energy needs, their water needs and their food needs. And, if they fail at it they’ll have Ben and me to catch them and prevent anything more than a great learning opportunity from happening.
We’re also building up our animals. We have our livestock guardians, our ducks, rabbits, goats, chickens, pigs and soon a pair of American Guinea Hogs! We’re using this time to learn about the animals and their personalities and needs so that when we’re there we won’t have wasted the time of here.
We’re also looking at other food and feed sources. Ever made 2 55 gallon drums of raw pear vinegar? Or lacto-fermented grass to make your own “silage”? What about set up a fodder station? A massive worm bin that eats through the final product of the soldier flies? Or…dried soldier flies for a winter protein source? These are all things we’ve been doing through the years and some we’ve only started last year and this year. We’re adding as we go and learning what we need so we don’t have a big implosion or so Ben doesn’t explode.
As to Ben and me. We’re actively seeking time out to play together. Time is time. A minute can be a lifetime and we are actively seeking that out. After all…why wait and waste the now?
Tell me…what advice did you gain from Nicole of Adventures Off Grid?
