Nicole, of Adventures Off Grid, and I have developed a friendship mainly based on gentle parenting. We value connecting with the kids, the giving of time and energy versus stuff. And, as she now has an off grid home with all kinds of animals I asked her how going off grid has affected her parenting.
Going off grid seems to have made her more busy. But, it’s the busy that involves the kids rather than excludes them.
As she’s milking the goats or the cows her girls are next to her, watching and learning. Witnessing a lesson in gentleness, being respectful and grateful to the animal sharing it’s bounty with them. Learning to be aware of surroundings and to watch out for a tail swatting flies or worse getting their toes stepped on like Nicole. *hehe love you my friend!*
Her son is working side by side with both of his parents learning carpentry skills, patience and that gentleness comes from both women and men. That one can build a home that shelters from the cold and storms of the world.
And, the kids are helping one another. Strengthening a relationship that has come from time together. Time that brings both laughter and tears…but time that pulls them closer together and more responsible. Nicole has mentioned how they are naturally watching over one another. She’s seen her older children engaging the their toddler sister if Nicole and Kris are doing something with the house and not safe for the kids to be up close and center. They’re entertaining the baby because they see there is a need.
I may not be able to give my kids everything they want but I give them what they need. Love, time, and attention. You can’t buy those things. ~Unknown
It’s beautiful as they learn there is strength in family and that together there is nothing they can’t do when a parent cares to and is able to give them exactly what they need.
